This Penguin chiller is designed for larger tubs/tanks of water. It requires a 208 – 240v outlet.

Shipping is included to all lower 48 states. Please call for Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, or Mexico.

Penguin water chillers come with a titanium heat exchanger, which prevents copper from coming into contact with your water. Because toxic levels of copper can build up in water being used for long periods of time, copper heat exchangers aren’t recommended.

All chillers have a built-in flow switch to disable the chiller in the event of a pump failure.

Digital Controller: The built-in controller constantly monitors your system’s incoming water temperature, therefore, water flow is needed at all times in order for it to successfully read current temperatures. When your system’s water temperature moves above your desired set point, the controller tells the compressor and fan to turn on and begin cooling the water. Once your desired set point temperature is reached, the compressor and fan will turn off.

Pump: A separate pump is required. Which pump you get depends on the volume of water in your cold plunge and how many feet of plumbing you have. Danner Mag-drive pumps are recommended because they have the correct pressure (psi). Available flow rates are from 500 gph – 1800 gph. Other pumps may be acceptable for use however they often apply less than 10 psi to the chiller. If you’re using a different pool/spa pump or any other pump rated in horsepower please talk with our tech support first.

Sizing Your Chiller
There are a number of variables to keep in mind when choosing the best-size chiller for your cold plunge. The best practice is to design for the “worst case scenario,” and if in doubt, choose the next stronger unit.

  • Volume of water
  • Desired water temperature
  • Ambient temperature (average, high, and low)
  • Ambient humidity
  • Will the plunge/chiller be placed indoors or outside
  • Amount of direct sun exposure
  • Tank/tub material
  • Amount of insulation
  • Type of plumbing
  • Length of plumbing
  • Number, frequency, and duration of people using the cold plunge

Example:

If you live in California on a hot day it might reach 90F but drop into the 60s at night. With the low humidity, a 1/2 HP chiller would be fine for tanks around 100-150 gallons.

In Central Texas, if it is in the 90F range, it might only drop to 80F at night. With the high humidity, a 1 HP chiller would perform better.

When in doubt, it is better to design the chiller for the worst-case scenario, and oversizing your chiller will simply mean that it cools your water much faster. Undersizing a chiller will cause it to run more frequently and possibly not be able to get the water to your desired temperature.

Condensation
If you live in a hot, humid climate, plan for condensation on the floor area beneath the plumbing, pump, and filter.

Outdoor Use
Standard Penguin Chillers are not intended for outdoor use. If used outdoors, the case and interior components can be damaged by ambient heat, cold, rain, and humidity. If you want a chiller rated for outdoor use, consider the Cold Therapy Chiller or a Commercial Chiller.

Additional Items Needed
The following items will be needed to set up a chiller-based cold plunge:

  • pump
  • sediment filter
  • tubing/pipes
  • fittings / connectors
